I've been meaning to post all day, but admittedly, I've been enjoying a craptastic mood. I don't want to actually DO anything, but god forbid my children interrupt my NOT DOING THINGS. Snappish much? Also I'm not sure, but it feels like something is wrong with me. It took me all morning yesterday to complete the simple task of filling out and mailing Alex's birthday party invitations. This morning I was equally dumbfounded simply figuring out our meal plan for the rest of the week. It's like my brain is filled with cotton balls.
I'm going to just blame hormones and move on. [Speaking of hormones, have I mentioned that it really REALLY feels like I'm having a monthly cycle? I have cramps and achey legs, crabbiness, every single telltale sign of my cycle, except the cycle itself. Anyone else with a Mirena experiencing this? It's weird, but I'll take it!]
Astute readers will notice a new item in my sidebar: CONTAGIOUS DISEASES WATCH 2008-2009! Genoa already caught her first cold of the school year (even though she's not even in school yet!) and with it came my idea to start actually keeping track of the snot factor. It seems like we spent half of last year sick, so I might as well document it someplace, if for no other reason than to make everyone else with perma-sick kids feel better.
Does anyone have a good recipe for an apple crisp? I used a ladder today to reach some of the bigger, prettier apples off our tree and now I can't wait to eat them, but I'm not in the mood (see above) to bake an apple pie. Any ideas?

Sorry you're feeling out of it... hope it passes soon!
I just posted my favorite apple crisp recipe over at my other blog. It's not fancy, but it's easy and good. Just click the link I put in for my URL, and it should take you straight there.

**whispering this comment***
I have a friend who 'used' Mirena and experienced some of what you are describing, cramps, crabbiness, decreased energy, etc... she wrote it off to hormones as well, for a while anyway, then she spoke with her doctor about how she was feeling and what she was experiencing ... a few tests later revealed that Mirena had failed her ... she was pregnant!
Please don't shoot the messenger!

I second Linda. I'm sure you've heard Mothergoosemouse's story. :)

OMG, I hope you're not knocked up.
I actually like to cook up the apples in the old deep skillet with some butter, cinnamon and brown sugar. It tastes like pie filling, but there's no work making crust, and it only takes about fifteen minutes.

Here is a recipe my hubby loves.
Apple Crisp
4 c. sliced apples (pared)
2/3 c. brown sugar
1/2 c. flour
1/4 c. oatmeal
3/4 tsp. cinnamon
3/4 tsp. nutmeg
1/3 c. butter/margarine (melted)
Spray or grease 8x8 pan. Please sliced apples in bottom pan. Mix rest of ingredients & crumble on top of apples. Bake 30 mins in 375 oven.
Enjoy!

lurker here but don't be afraid - harmless really - i am a user of the Mirena (almost 7 years sucessfully - L.O.V.E. it!!!) but i also get cramps, sore breast, moody, etc once a month. No biggie - it should pass. It freaked me out at the beginning because it didn't happen until I'd had the device for quite awhile -so i took a pregnancy test. If you're worried just do that and clear up worries!

Easiest Apple Dessert Ever (the kids could help with this one):
spray a foil/lined pan.
Spread apple slices in pan.
spread a cup of dry yellow cake mix over apple (spice cake mix from a box might be good too?).
crumble butter over cake mix.
sprinkle brown sugar on top, add chopped nuts if you like.
Bake at 350 until the house smells good.

I too am a Mirena user (2 years) and have not had a period since starting it, but I do occasionally get the other monthly symptoms (though a LOT milder than before).
My fave apple crisp recipe is a lot like Kari's above only you use softened butter, not melted (same amount though), 1/2 cup oatmeal instead of 1/4 cup, and 3/4 cup brown sugar instead of 2/3 cup. It basically just makes more topping than Kari's recipe, which I personally love b/c I like my apple crisp to have a big, thick crumble on the top. Everything else is the same, and I have gotten tons of compliments on it over the years.

I will have to go dig up mom's recipe for apple crisp - basically just brown sugar, butter, and cinnamon mixed up on top of the apples, and then bake the whole thing. Totally awesome.
Also - thepioneerwoman.com has a apple dumpling recipe I've been wanting to try. Looks really yummy. (And she uses mountain dew!)

Best Apple Crisp Ever: 350 degree oven.
1/2 c brown sugar
1/2 c flour
1/2 c oat
cinnamon to taste
mix those together w/ 6 T butter (could probably cut back by 1 or 2 T) stuff in fridge till ready.
4+ c diced apples
1/4 c brown sugar
1/4 flour
cinnamon to taste
1 T lemon juice
Toss those together. I put mine in 4 7oz ramekins and divided the crumble topping amongst them. set them on a cookie sheet and baked for 35 minutes.
AMAZING. SO FREAKING GOOD I COULD CRY. really.
