Even though he won't technically be three until Friday, today is Alex's birthday party. I feel like I've been rushing around like a madwoman all week getting everything ready, but I'm not exactly sure why. The party is pretty simple - food, beer, bounce house. I can't believe he's almost three.
I went and jinxed myself with that last post, I swear. On her second night in the Pack N Play, it took TEN tries to get Genoa to fall asleep. TEN. She had a bunch of gas and was exhausted. She'd fall asleep in my arms, I'd lay her down, she'd sleep for two minutes, wake up SCREAMING and then fart when I picked her up again. Baby farts are cute, but not THAT cute.
Am I the only one who feels sleep deprivation in her ankles? My lower legs ACHE when I don't get enough sleep. My feet get angry when I don't give them enough of a break.
I'm all crampy too. I think it's still from the IUD, since I've been spotting heavily since I had that sucker put in. I had a bittersweet appointment with my OB on Tuesday and he checked it so I know it's okay. Seeing my OB made me really sad, actually. I adore him and he's seen me through two of the most life-changing things I've ever experienced. I really couldn't even imagine a better doctor. And the sad thing is that I'll probably never see him again. I won't have any reason to see him until after we move and by then I'll have to find a new doctor. It never occurred to me that I'd miss him, but unlike my friends, it's not like I can call him up when we're back in town visiting and ask him out for a beer, you know?
I'll just have to add that to the ever-growing list of stuff I'm going to miss about living here. I'll put his name right next to the honest auto mechanic who never rips us off.

When Tommy would do the same thing Genoa's doing - fall asleep exhausted in your arms then wake up screaming as soon as you move to crib - we instituted the 10 minute rule. One he closed his eyes and his breathing deepened into sleep we'd note the time. Then we wouldn't try to move him for 10 minutes. It usually worked. 10 minutes feels like a really long time when there's an obviously sleeping baby in your arms and there's good TV on in the other room. I'd also make any changes to the room like turning off the little lamp at the start of those 10 minutes so that I didn't startle him with a change at the end of the wait and have to start over.
When he got older we weaned him off the 10 minute thing by moving him one minute earlier every 3-4 days until he was being moved right after he fell asleep.

I miss both of my OBs back in New York, so I know how you feel. Did you get a Mirena or copper IUD?

Hi, I've been lurking for a while (long time reader, first-time poster) and really enjoy your writing. I had my first baby (Ella) July 5 and oh yes, I have achy feet. My hands and shoulders ache too. Do you think it is sleep deprivation? I thought it must be some sort of vitamin deficiency. Anyway, thanks so much for your very fine website!

MOVE? Did I totally miss something, or is my mommy brain failing me again?

I am pretty sure that I go to the same OB as you having read back in your blog. I just started with him but funny thing is that I was in the office on Tuesday too. Must have just missed each other!

I love my IUD-Mirena by the way!! It has made my periods wonky. Not in a bad way, just different. I am sorry about your OB/GYN, I love mine too and would hate to have to leave them. I think I have a grip on my sleep deprivation- I just nap when they do and fuck cleaning/laundry/dishes...they will still be there later!! Plus,I have JUST RECENTLY got both of the boys to take their naps AT THE SAME TIME!!! So yeah,I am ALL about the naps!!

My ankles ache today and I'm exhausted -- very strange!!
When you do move up this way, I have a great midwife and a great nurse practitioner (at an OB's office) to refer you to...just so you know! :)
